The idea of being a solicitor wasn’t even mine. It came from my nan where I was about 11 or 12. ‘You’ve got the gift of the gab,’ she said. ‘You should be a solicitor!’
I also enjoyed reading and school, so, when I completed my GCSEs and A-Levels at my local comprehensive, I got a place at the University of Hull to study Law. I also started getting work experience in a local law firm during the summer holidays.
When I completed my law degree, I went on to take my legal practice course at the College of Law in York and then it was time to find a training contract and begin my career as a solicitor with the two years of practical experience I needed to qualify.
It wasn’t easy. However, I was lucky to secure a contract with Crutes Solicitors in Carlisle and then, when three of the partners left to form Bell Park Kerridge, I got the chance to move with them. It’s a decision I have never regretted. I qualified in 2001 and my career has never stopped developing since. And in 2023, I celebrated 25 years working here. That shows how much I’ve enjoyed it.
Looking back, I think I was fortunate to get an opportunity to work in a firm like BPK where I have been exposed to a broad range of work and given autonomy allowing me to develop my knowledge.
I initially practised in litigation and personal injury but, in more recent times, have diversified into family law and private client work as well. As my skills have developed, I’ve progressed to being a Senior Associate Solicitor.
What do I enjoy about the job most? That’s an easy one. Helping clients to solve their problems is definitely the best part. Clients often come to us at the most difficult and stressful times of their lives. It’s so satisfying to be able to play a part in assisting and supporting them.
